Oh geez I'm a theatre nerd!
I listen to both "RENT" and "Next to Normal" to deal with my family. They both discuss drug use among other things that make them great.

"Another Day" (RENT)
"There's only us, there's only this, forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way. No day but today."

"Will I" (RENT)
"Will I lose my dignity? Will someone care? Will I wake tommorow from this nightmare?"

"Just Another Day" (Next to Normal)
Waking up and preparing to act like a normal family no matter what's going on…haven't we all been there?

"You Don't Know"
I had a lot more compassion for those struggling with mental illness after listening to this song.

"Maybe" (Next to Normal)
The quote in my signature is from this song, and it's just generally everything I want to hear from my family and Natalie's part is what I'd like to hear.

"Light" (Next to Normal)
"Day after day, we'll find the will to find our way. Knowing that the darkest skies will someday see the sun."

Also:
"Always Starting over" (If/Then)
"Love WHile You Can" (If/Then)
"Angel Now" by Daphne Rubin Vega
"Live Every Day" (Feeling Electric)
"God Blesses the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts
GiGi
<3
"I don't need a life that's normal, that's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Yes, something next to normal, that's the thing I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by." -Next to Normal

Went to see Seussical the Musical - great show.
The songs - The Things You Can Think or How Lucky You Are - are my favorites - real upbeat and lighten my mood. Hope you see the musical (with or without kids - and I'm not a theater person) - I'm going to see it again. xoxoxo Paula

"Love Can Build a Bridge" by the Judds is a song that makes me think of my son and me. Lots has happened between us throughout the years and we still love each other. He may have the disease. I may have reacted to the disease. Ultimately, none of that truly matters to me. What matters is that I love my son. My son loves me. After 41 years, I truly doubt that will ever change. He hasn't been easy to love. I haven't been easy to love. But the Love in us and between us has helped us both say "yes" more often to learning the lessons of unconditional Love than not. For that, I am grateful. It is true: Love Can Build a Bridge.

Story of My Life by One Direction:

Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain
I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days
She told me in the morning
She don't feel the same about us in her bones
It seems to me that when I die
These words will be written on my stone
And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The ground beneath my feet is open wide
The way that I've been holdin' on too tight
With nothing in between
The story of my life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm and time
Is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life, I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke, inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

I love this part of the Nar-Anon group.
Music puts me where I am not sure I have been aware of such deep feelings.
Often I listen to music which brings me to the brink of my depression- somehow wallowing in the pain brings some type of release.
Today it is difficult. I feel so inadequate and hopeless.
The music reminds me of so much loss...
It's just a difficult day. I guess tomorrow is another day.
I hope I have the strength to see another day.

This is a great post. I am just now discovering this side of the forum.
I use music to clear my mind and have "me" time. I like music that reminds me to be strong or have fun in my day.
Carrie Underwood's song "Heartbeat Song". It reminds me I still have a heart... even if I'm hurting, I can heal and get through it to another day.
Sheryl Crow's "Soak up the Sun". This song just helps me relax. I picture a warm beach and waves every time I hear it. :) I feel like it's also a song about gratitude.
Lately I've been listening almost daily to the soundtrack from "Mama Mia"...The musical with Meryl Streep & Amanda Seyfried.
When it's just me at home I like to sing it out while I clean house. :) The music is so upbeat and it reminds me to find joy in each day, no matter what's going on.
Progress not perfection

I've been watching Mary Tyler Moore reruns and the theme song has me sobbing. I believe these are tears of healing and release.

I was 9 and very alone in 1970 when this show came out.

I am now finally starting to work on and get out of my isolation. Thanks Nar-Anon.

Overcomer by Mandisa

I just heard this one in its entirety. I was curious to hear the song after seeing the viral video of the four year old singing it. She is battling a rare blood disorder.

My 19yo rAS heard me listening to it and said he knew it and likes it too.

It's considered gospel but it sounds more like current pop music very bright and upbeat. I like most genre's of music. The only thing I am thrown by is the reference to T Mac the rapper, but maybe I should be careful here it sounds like I am going to pass judgement, yikes a close call.

Lyrics
Staring at a stop sign

Watching people drive by

T mac on the radio

Got so much on your mind

Nothing's really going right

Looking for a ray of hope

Whatever it is you may be going through
I know he's not gonna let it get the best of you

You're an overcomer
Stay in the fight 'til the final round
You're not going under
'Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it's hopeless
That's when he reminds you
That you're an overcomer
You're an overcomer

Everybody's been down
Hit the bottom, hit the ground
Ooh, You're not alone
Just take a breath, don't forget
Hang on to his promises
He wants you to know

You're an overcomer
Stay in the fight 'til the final round
You're not going under
'Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it's hopeless
That's when he reminds you
That you're an overcomer
You're an overcomer

The same man, the great I am
The one who overcame death
Is living inside of you
So just hold tight, fix your eyes
On the one who holds your life
There's nothing he can't do
He's telling youYou're an overcomer
Stay in the fight 'til the final round
You're not going under
'Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it's hopeless
That's when he reminds you
That you're an overcomer
You're an overcomer

You're an overcomer
You're an overcomer

See don't quit, don't give in
You're an overcomer

Don't quit, don't give in
You're an overcomer

Don't quit, don't give in
You're an overcomerYou're an overcomer

Rufus Wainwright wrote "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk" when he was in denial. It's such a great song about denying drug use. (he has found sobriety since)

I also like "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran.

Bright Lights- Match Box Twenty ( doesn't apply to my situation completely but I get it)
This one makes me cry, (my AS was abstaining but not in recovery though at the time I though he was I didn't know the difference), anyway he was the lead in a community choir and asked to sing this song, it was perfect for the message and what he was up against. It still is.
Rachel Platten- Fight Song
"Fight Song"

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me
In too deep
Say I'm in too deep (in too deep)
And it's been two years
I miss my home
But there's a fire burning in my bones
Still believe
Yeah, I still believe

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

A lot of fight left in me

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

This is my fight song (Hey!)
Take back my life song (Hey!)
Prove I'm alright song (Hey!)
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong (I'll be strong)
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

No I've still got a lot of fight left in me
