What to expect at the Convention

Post by MATT'S MOM » Mon Jan 01, 2018 11:10 am

Information about the upcoming convention:

1. What to expect?
Friday Night: Check in at registration, gather your convention materials, meet up with friends from Forum/other groups, look around at the schedule of speakers, programs, have dinner with friends…check out the hospitality table, take a look at the displays.

Attend the opening meetings – there is an icebreaker activity to get to meet other folks.
Snacks afterwards – usually good snacks 

After the general meeting, there is a f2f meeting that is so awesome. It is open to all who are there.

Get together with friends enjoy the rest of the evening.

Saturday Morning/Day: If you did not arrive Friday night, go to the registration table and check in, meet up with friend, there are usually coffee, tea, and snacks waiting for you. The day will have meetings and breakout sessions – there will be signups for the breakout sessions. Lunch is on you. There will be box lunches available for purchase in advance $14.00 -- that will save you having to leave to go out for lunch. After lunch, more breakout sessions. In late afternoon, there is a general session again. – It will include a countdown of time in recovery for us! You won’t want to miss that it is awesome.

Saturday Night: Dinner buffet and awarding of the raffle prizes—see note below. There is usually an activity planned for after dinner—then plan to gettogether with your friends and enjoy the evening.

Sunday – Breakfast, speakers, final remarks, saying goodbye to friends old and new. – making plans to meet up next year! Last 2 years, there was a breakout session on Sunday before breakfast.

2. You need to pre-register for the dinner on Saturday and the Breakfast on Sunday. – It is on the registration form – but you must register in advance for those two meals.

3. There are tee shirts, sweat shirts and hoodies for sale – see the registration form for details—they must be pre-ordered and paid for in advance.

4. RAFFLE PRIZES: Each group will bring a gift to raffle – some of past prizes included gift cards, movie tickets, Money cakes, themed gift baskets, etc. Our group will be doing a gift card basket. – please see the post regarding this. The cost for the raffle tickets is small and the money goes towards the cost of the convention. Last year there were over 20 raffle prizes….

5. Is There a Dress Code: -- no, dress comfortably, jeans, sneakers, sweats, casual—you might want to dress up a bit for dinner on Saturday night – but you don’t have too,

6. Other things to consider: If you are not doing the box lunch for Saturday, there are several restaurants close to the hotel (but you have to drive to get to them.)

There is usually a bookstore setup for the convention – with reading materials, and gifts – recovery themed. These would-be items for purchase.

The Nar-ateen group attended last year and that was very cool to see what they were working on.

Narcotics Anonymous also usually has a table at the convention and has provided a speaker for at least the last 2 conventions.

There is a literature table set up for Nar-Anon Literature.
The speakers are recorded and the CD’s are available for purchase by the end of the conventions.
People come from all over- especially from f2f groups in the PA /NJ/NY /DE area. – but any one in Nar-Anon is welcome.
